Southeastern Free Will Baptist College Mourns the Passing of Former President Dr. Lorenza Stox

WENDELL, NC — Southeastern Free Will Baptist College joins with countless friends, family members, and churches in mourning the passing of Dr. Lorenza Stox, a beloved leader, pastor, and former president of the college.
Dr. Stox was instrumental in establishing Southeastern as a new, ministry-focused institution within the Free Will Baptist denomination. From its founding, Southeastern sought to train men and women both academically and practically for the building of strong local churches to the glory of God and for the advancement of our movement. Dr. Stox gave himself wholeheartedly to that mission.
As the college’s first Dean, beginning with its opening year in 1983, Dr. Stox poured into students both inside and outside the classroom. I was among those first students, and I will forever be grateful for the way he invested in my life, as he did in so many others. His steady leadership and pastoral heart helped lay the foundation for Southeastern’s ministry.
When God called him to serve as pastor of Parkers Chapel Free Will Baptist Church, Dr. Stox continued to faithfully support Southeastern. His influence extended far beyond his local congregation, as he led the church to give generously and consistently toward strengthening the college. Even while away from campus, he served on the board of directors and remained an advocate for the school he loved deeply.
In God’s providence, Dr. Stox later returned to Southeastern to serve as its president. At a time when strong and balanced leadership was needed, he answered the call with wisdom, stability, and vision. Under his leadership, the college continued its mission of preparing laborers for the harvest field.
Even after retirement, Dr. Stox never ceased to invest in Southeastern. He raised funds, promoted the work, and encouraged those of us privileged to follow in his steps. Just last week, Dr. Stox called me personally to arrange a lunch meeting with a dear friend and a long-time supporter of the college. That meeting did not happen, as Dr. Stox is now in glory, but the impact of his life and leadership remains with us.
I cannot express my gratitude enough for what Dr. Stox meant to me personally and what he means to Southeastern Free Will Baptist College. We are grateful for his faithful service and honor his legacy as a leader, pastor, and friend who dedicated his life to building up the Lord’s church.
Our prayers are with his family and his church during this time of loss. We rejoice, however, in knowing that Dr. Stox is now in the presence of the Lord he so faithfully served.
